New joystick feature - CANBus available with JC6000

NEW! Penny + Giles is launching a new output option for its range of JC6000 robust multi-axis joysticks - CANbus.
As operators demand improved efficiency, responsiveness and functionality from their vehicles, OEMs are turning to CANbus systems to enable them to improve control systems in off-highway construction, municipal and agricultural vehicles. The company’s popular JC6000s can now be connected easily to the Bus network and communicate with add-on sub-systems and equipment such as hedge trimmers, and intelligent ploughs.
There is also a CANbus facility where additional input pins are provided in the joystick mating connector, enabling non-CANbus features to be connected directly to the Bus network without an extra node being required. This enables a system integrator to design smaller, neater joystick interfaces for applications such as machine armrests.
The CANbus option uses two Hall sensors in each of the XY axes to provide safe, reliable operation with the long life benefits of this contactless technology. This safety is further enhanced as signal integrity checks are carried out within the joystick.
The CANbus option benefits from the use of a moulded plastic cover with integrated connector providing an IP66 sealing rating below the panel when the appropriated sealed mating connector is used.
Penny + Giles offers a wide range of standard configurable handle designs including additional axes of control, momentary and person present switches that can be integrated into the CANbus output. Large volume OEM users can also benefit from the Penny + Giles custom-design service to develop handle formats that are unique to specialist vehicle functions.
Thanks to the modular ´designed-for-manufacture´ format of the JC6000, Penny + Giles is able to offer OEMs the flexibility of a wide range of options cost-effectively, making this a highly competitive choice, particularly for high volume users.

JC2000 Industrial robot controllers (IRC)

NEW! Joystick provides reliable programming of industrial robots.
Penny + Giles Controls Ltd is pleased to announce that it has supplied more than 9,000 JC2000 joysticks for use in ABB’s leading industrial robot controllers (IRC).
The contract, which was secured through Swedish distributor AB Elwia, follows the successful integration of the joystick as standard in the fifth generation IRC, the IRC5.
IRC is used for control and mechanical automation devices in a range of processes such as machine loading and unloading, positioning of work pieces, pouring of aluminium and press-to-press transfer of metal sheets. Each controller includes a ‘teach unit’ through which users programme the motion of each device using a joystick and ABB’s easy-to-use software interface.
“JC2000 was chosen primarily for its reliability,” explains Per Eric Carlsson, engineer for quality assurance of suppliers, ABB. “We had experienced some problems with the joysticks in the past and needed a fit and forget solution. We wanted to work with a partner that could deliver a cost-effective backwards compatible solution that could be integrated into the unit easily.”
Following an initial enquiry to Swedish distributor AB Elwia, the three companies worked closely together to develop a customised joystick for ABB’s fourth generation IRCs. The changes included a new custom-made 50mm2 mounting adaptor to enable the joystick to fit within the existing teach panel unit.
“The project is a testament to the excellent relationship we have with AB Elwia,” comments Les Metcalfe, Joystick Product Manager at Penny & Giles Controlls Ltd. “Together we were able to provide a winning combination of high-quality bespoke product and open communication between local contact, production floor and customer.”
JC2000 uses Hall Effect technology and is designed for precision fingertip control applications. This contact-less system offers almost limitless life and zero maintenance. Compact, it comes in one, two or three axis configurations and sales of the JC2000 have now reached over half a million worldwide.
JC2000: New low profile joystick handle for chest packs and robotics equipment
NEW! New handle for its popular JC2000 joystick controller. Designed specifically for remote operation chest packs and robotics equipment, the HL handle measures just 57mm in height providing OEMs with a low profile that enables greater flexibility of design and increased durability of equipment.
The new handle, which can be used for one, two or three axis operation, has been created for units that have limited protection around the joystick or which require multiple controllers within a small surface area. By reducing the profile, damage to the joystick can be minimised should the unit be mishandled (for example if a chest pack is dropped during operation). It also reduces the chances of operators leaning on other handles during operation causing un-necessary wear and tear.
Its low profile, combined with a below mounting flange depth of only 31mm, enables designers to meet increasing demand for smaller, more compact control units. Sealed to IP65 with hidden fixings ensures protection in environments where dust and other particles may be present.
JC2000 is a reliable, proven joystick controller based on non-contact Hall-effect technology. Used for precision fingertip control in radio/infrared chest packs and robotic teach controllers and for more than five years, it provides smooth and accurate control where safety and long life are primary requirements.
JC400: Multi-Axis Fingertip Joystick
Designed for use with an electronic controller, the JC400 can be specified to generate three switched outputs per half axis, or analogue and switched reference signals proportional to the distance and direction over which the handle is moved.
Installation flexibility has been provided by using different forms of mounting flanges independent of the function of the joystick. The elimination of micro switches and camshafts has removed the need to maintain the joystick throughout its operating life of in excess of 5 million cycles.
The JC400´s range of ergonomic handle options feature rotary operated potentiometers, or switches, for a third axis control, or ´Deadman´s´ switches that can be used to improve the integrity of your control system.
Typical applications include remote control sytems, CCTV camera manipulation and the control of agricultural and material handling equipment.

JC120: New joystick option protects against ingress of dust and dirt

New joystick option protects against ingress of dust and dirt
Developed a protective boot for its JC120 single axis fingertip joystick. Designed for use in environments where aggressive materials are present, the boot protects against the ingress of dust and dirt. As a result, manufacturers of control and handling equipment can be assured of consistent, accurate operation and longer operating life despite harsh conditions.
The boot is made from Neoprene, chosen for its resistance to deterioration from fats, oils, greases and many other petroleum-based products. It has excellent weathering properties and is self-extinguishing, making it ideal for the conditions often found in the production and storage of materials such as aggregates, chemicals and agricultural foodstuffs.
Sealed to IP67 with the boot fitted, JC120 is typically used in remote control ‘chest packs’, robotics, remote camera controls and agricultural and material handling equipment. A small, compact joystick measuring only 26.5mm width (28.5mm with the boot fitted) it features a pivoting lever design that provides one axis of forward and reverse movement and a spring-return to centre. Electrical connections are through a 7-pin Molex 70553 series latching male connector on the joystick base.
JC100: Single-Axis Fingertip Joystick
Designed for use with electronic controllers, the conductive plastic track in the JC100 generates analogue and switched reference signals, proportional to the distance and direction over which the handle is moved.
Sealed to IP66, the JC100 is suitable for the most extreme environments. Installation time is reduced through the use of standard automotive connectors, whilst the removal of all micro switches and camshafts has eliminated the need to maintain the joystick throughout its operating life in excess of 5 million cycles.
Typical applications include remote control chest packs and the control of agricultural and material handling equipment.
